Same Sex Marriage Bill Dies: Where is Senator Beach?

January 8, 2010

James Beach

Yesterday, our State Senate rejected , by a vote of 14 to 20, a bill that would allow same-sex marriage.  This was a hotly debated bill with many in the Senate publically sharing their passion for or against this bill.  you can read a complete rundown of the bill and its defeat at NJtoday.net.

What is so surprizing is that Senator Jim Beach did not vote on this bill.  The public and the voters will never know how he felt about the proposed legislation.  Isnt the reason we elect senators is to cast votes for constituents?  Unfortunately Beach was not alone in his abstention.  According to NJtoday.net one disappointed observer said,

“Three spineless Democrats stayed on the fence, James Beach of Cherry Hill, incoming Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney and Paul A. Sarlo,”

At least Senator Beach is in good company.

I concur. When I heard the news yesterday of who the 4 SJ holdouts were it was no surprise. Regardless of where I stand on the issue they owe it to their constituents to vote one way or the other.

They get elected to vote not sit on the sidelines.
