Haddonfield Citizens Gather To Honor it’s “Citizen of the Year”

January 24, 2010

Saturday, January 23, 2010 the Haddonfield Lions Club sponsored the 38th annual Mayor’s Breakfast.  All of the Borough’s elected officials were present.  Lions Club President, Robert Turner, welcomed the attendees.  Republican Mayor, Tish Colombi, gave the “State of the Borough” address which covered the town’s accomplishments during the past year.  Mayor Colombi shared her view on the new state law that allows towns to have their non-partisan elections in November.  Mayor Colombi told the crowd that, although moving the Borough’s elections to November may save a modest amount of money, it would adversely impact the non-partisan history of the town.

Commissioner Kasko gave the Borough’s Revenue and Finance report.  Kasko said the Borough’s finances were sound but discussed the changes and challenges he and his Citizen’s Budget Review Committee faced.  Kasko stressed the need for continued non tax revenue.

“[W]e have aggressively sought out grant money available at the federal, state and county levels –  and were successful in 2009 in securing extra funds for road and infrastructure improvements and open space preservation.”

  Jeff also praised Governor Christie and his pledge to eliminate unfunded mandates,

“I remain hopeful that our new Governor – who has pledged to eliminate unfunded mandates, make it easier to share costs, reign-in unnecessary spending, more fairly distribute municipal and school aid, and stop the fiscal roller-coaster ride faced by towns and taxpayers across New Jersey – will succeed.

Kasko ‘s address echoed some of the issues that he discussed at the Commissioners meeting earlier this month;

“With state funding uncertain … revenue from fees and permits down, and state caps on spending,” the budget doesn’t have much wiggle room.

The festivities culminated with the presentation of the citizen of the year award to Joe Murphy.  Below are photos of the event and the award being presented by Mayor Colombi.
