Marriage Equality Group Pulls Financial Support for Camden GOP

February 10, 2010

Garden State Equality Cash

I was shocked and horrified to learn that one of the largest advocacy groups in New Jersey will no longer give to the Camden County Republican Party.  I immediately questioned my leadership and wondered what we did wrong.  Yes it is true, Garden State Equality has made an institutional decision to stop giving to political parties.  In Camden County we are left to figure out how to go on without their financial support.  Hmmmm.

I realize GSE has many talented public relations professions in its ranks who are experts at spinning words and twisting images to give a desired perception.  I just cannot decide whether their latest press release is a masterful work of public relations or an all out comic scream.

The press release contains the following quotes,

“No longer will we let any political party take our money and volunteers with one hand, and slap us in the face with the other when we seek full equality.”

“No political party has a record good enough on LGBT civil rights that it can rightfully claim to be entitled to our money on a party-wide basis.”

“…a bold signal that no political party should take the support of the LGBT community and its allies for granted…”

Is any Republican Chairman at all concerned about this “news”?  In reading the press release you could substitute “the Democrat Party” for the generic “any political party” and not change the accuracy or meaning of the press release.    You can read the full text of the press release  and see if you agree.

The reality is the Democrats have seeming endless campaign cash and the loss of a couple of bucks from Garden State Equality will not have any impact on the way they operate.  Look at Senator Beach (LD6).  By all accounts he is a proud liberal democrat who hid in the state house when the marriage equality bill was called for a vote.  Beach did not want to offend his traditional values supporters or his socially liberal supporters so he did not cast a vote either way.   Sadly, to this day the public does not know where Jim Beach stands on the issue of same sex marriage or marriage equality.

The real question is “If Garden State Equality had not given campaign money to the Democrat Party, would Jim Beach cast a vote on the Marriage Equality issue?”  I suspect given the seemingly endless supply of campaign money the Democrats have Jim Beach would not have been motivated to cast a vote on the issue regardless of GSE’s contributions.

What motivates Jim Beach and the Camden County Democrats is maintaining power and controlling the New Jersey Senate.  If Garden State Equality really wants to make a statement to the Democrat Party they should use take their campaign cash and volunteers and vigorously support Jim Beach’s opponent next year.    I guarantee Jim Beach and the Democrat party will take notice then.  If Steve Sweeny is no longer Senate President he will take notice too.
