John Adler is Our Al Bundy!

Al Bundy

The World Cup is upon us and for soccer fans across the globe this is an exciting time.  Admittedly, soccer is not my favorite sporting event.  (Those that know me know I have a passion for college basketball.)  Unfortunately for the fans of the game, John Adler saw the World Cup as an opportunity to tell the press about his high school soccer career.  I only wish I was kidding.

According to  Fox News,

John Adler waxed romantically about how he scored the winning goal for West Deptford High School in a match with rival Haddonfield High School in 1976.”

If that wasn’t bad enough he then told the reporter about a World Cup soccer game that was played 60 years ago.

“Not since the U.S. beat England in 1950 has there been such a shock,” Adler said. While the Americans didn’t win the World Cup that year, they did upset a highly touted British squad. Some soccer historians call that game “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World.”

Kudos to the Adler staffer that fed him that one.  Is Adler that afraid of Jon Runyan’s NFL career that he needs to “wax romantically” about his winning soccer goals in high school?  Does the family that cannot pay the mortgage because they are unemployed care about who won a soccer game in 1950?

When I read this I could not help but think of Ed O’Neil in the sitcom Married with Children.  O’Neil played the character Al Bundy who was in short – a loser in life. Everything in Bundy’s life (wife, children, car, in-laws, neighbors, career, just to name a few) was a disaster.  Bundy was always able to convince himself he was not a loser because in high school he scored 4 touchdowns in a single game at Polk High.

Bundy like Adler loves to share his high school sports past with anyone who would listen.

Below is a short montage of Al Bundy and his 4 touchdowns in a single game.  Enjoy!

The next video will be of Adler and his game winning soccer goals.  Stay tuned!

Yeah, whenever I think of Adler, I automatically think of sports heroics. Other phrases come to mind, like self-serving, self-centered time-waster, but definitely sports heroics is up there.
